Undoubtedly, the Maroon Bells (North and South Maroon Peak) are Colorado’s most recognized mountains, for these peaks are likely the most photographed mountains in North America. The popularity is easily explainable; in spring, summer, fall and winter, these peaks are stunning to look at. It’s that simple. Nothing beats their pyramid symmetry framed inside the gorgeous Maroon Lake u-shaped valley. The composition is perfect and memorable. And it’s why legions upon legions of vacationers visit these peaks. Lastly, a potent combination of popularity and picture perfection tends to cultivate a powerful lure among mountaineers….and the casual visitor, to make the summit.

The White River forest service likes to call them the “Deadly Bells” for every year these peaks do claim human life. Considering the high traffic, the Deadly Bells are probably not as deadly as one may think. However, it’s imperative to understand what it takes to climb these peaks and what it takes to do it in a safe manner. Ascending the Bells is a climb, not a hike.

First, these peaks are made up of crumbling sedimentary rock. The potential for rock fall is real, and likely is the number one hazard to be aware of while climbing. Don’t be an idiot and climb these peaks without a helmet and always know where others are in relation to you. Second, know and understand the weather. South Maroon’s standard class 3, South Ridge Route is very long and requires a lot of time above tree line where lightning tends to hang out. Spending time hanging out with lightning and hail will make you crap your pants. Third, without the existing cairns, the route finding for a casual climber could be a nightmare. Terrain from crumbling rock tends to be tough to discern a route. The fact of this matter is that there are cairns and this helps immensely, but keep in mind that the mountain hosts almost too many cairns. Trust your mountaineering instincts not somebody’s pile of rocks. Lastly, please understand your physical limits. Everyone will respect you for turning around as much as they will respect you for making a summit. The best mountaineering debates take place when someone disregards their physical limits.

The standard climbing routes for North and South Maroon Peak are very different, with the exception that both peaks are loose and dangerous. For South Maroon, I would describe the South Ridge Route as a strenuous exercise in route finding and determination. The route is only class 3 but it is long and steep. For most, the route will take maybe 9 to 11 hours to complete.

Humboldt Peak Overview

Humboldt Peak rests 1.5 mile northeast of its more famous neighbors, Crestone Needle and Crestone Peak. These conglomerate peaks reside within Colorado's linear Sangre de Christo Range. This fantastic stretch of mountains starts where the big and bulky Sawatch Range ends, just south of Salida, Colorado. Continuing south for 220 miles into New Mexico, the Sangre's host some of Colorado's more adventurous climbing. In contrast to the class 3,4,and 5 climbing within the Crestone Group, Humboldt offers a class 2 hike. The standard West Ridge route is a perfect introduction for hiking Colorado's famous fourteeners. Although not technically difficult, Humboldt requires a long approach and plenty of vertical (4,464 ft.). Be in shape so you can really enjoy this epic hike into a beautiful basin.

Humboldt Pk was named after Alexander von Humboldt who was a famous geographer, traveler, explorer, and mountaineer. The name was given by the miners in 1874.

Overview

Long's Peak stands proudly as Colorado's northernmost fourteener. It is unquestionably the monarch of the Front Range and northern Colorado. It is not only the highest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park and Boulder County, but it is also the 15th highest peak in Colorado. It's close proximity to Denver and its pure majesty make it the most popular climbing mountain in the state. The Keyhole Route is the most climbed route of any fourteener route in the state and is a true classic climb. It is not uncommon to have over 100 people on the summit at a time on a busy summer weekend, and long lines of people following each other up and down the mountain, often too close for comfort. The Keyhole route will attract several thousand climbers every summer. Routes up the mountain range from the Class 3 Keyhole to the Hornsby's Direct Route rated at 5.8. There are several trailheads, but most routes and variations start from the Long's Peak Trailhead.

One of Colorado's best known 14ers, the legendary Mount of the Holy Cross is famous for the east facing cross couloir, which fills with snow and forms a well defined cross. Erosion has made the cross less defined in the last 100 years. First discovered in 1869, it became the destination of Christian pilgrimages early in the 20th century, and continues to sport a colorful history that persists to this day.

The mountain is only 14 miles from the Vail ski area, and can be seen from a number of vantages, but for an intimate look at the mountain's namesake cross on the east face, one must climb up and over neighboring Notch Mountain to see it. There are two common routes to the top - Halfmoon Pass or Notch Mountain combined with Halo Ridge - both are Class 2 climbs. They can be combined into a loop for a very long day trek. A Class 3 steep snow and ice climb up the Cross Couloir is another route possibility for those looking for a moderate technical challenge. Angelica Couloir and Tear Drop are excellent alternate routes that still require going over Notch Mountain.

Mount of the Holy Cross was once a National Monument, but lost this status in the 50s. The area and the mountain became a wilderness during the 70s. The Holy Cross Wilderness is one of Colorado's shining jewels of nature's majesty. Unparalleled beauty adorns this beautiful plae of solitude, which teems with wildlife and flows free with an abundance of water.

Snowmass Mountain

Snowmass is the 32nd highest mountain, in Colorado and the 3rd highest in the Elk Range. Castle Peak is the only 14er in the range that is easier to climb then Snowmass. This say's a lot for the 14ers in the range considering Snowmass is a class 3 climb. All the rest of them are far more difficult and dangerous to climb.
Snowmass is also one of Colorado's most remote 14ers. Only San Luis Peak, Windom Peak, Eolus Peak and Sunlight Peak are more remote. The Shortest trail to its base is 8.4 miles. Snowmass cannot be seen from any roads or towns. There are several different routes up the mountain and they are all class 3. The Peak is a boulder that stands about 5 or 6 feet high. Snowmass is a spectacular mountain. It has a huge snowfield on the east side, which is one of Colorado's largest snowfields. The thin knife-edge ridges leading to the summit jet up about fifty feet from its slopes. The rocks look like spears coming up out of the earth. Following the tops of the ridges is a very exposed, dangerous, long and tedious process. These rocks are often no more then a couple of feet wide.

Huron Peak Elevation: 14012 ft / 4271 m

Huron Peak is a beautiful hike from the South Winfield Trailhead. Although it barely qualifies as a 14er (14,012) it compensates by being the farthest 14er peak from a paved road in the Sawatch Range. You cannot see a paved road from the summit. The route is class 2. If you start climbing from the South Winfield Trailhead you will encounter class 1 as you essentially walk up a dirt road until you reach the Forest Service closure gate after about 2 miles. This is where the 4WD drive ends and parking is readily available. The route starts just to the left of the closure gate. The route is a relatively easy route for a 14er and is quite scenic. It is on a dirt road to begin, then it is generally all switchbacks on well maintained trails for most of the rest of the hike. If you drive to the end of the 4WD road it is a very short, fast climb. (We drove it.) The trail is in excellent condition thanks to the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative

Mount Antero Overview

Mount Antero attracts people for many different reasons. It is the 10th highest mountain in Colorado, and that alone makes it an important destination for many. It offers several climbing routes which are not terribly difficult. A wealth of fine gemstones have been mined from Antero's slopes, and this makes the mountain popular among rock hounds. Not coincidentally, there is a good, 4WD road on the peak's west side going nearly to the summit. This makes Antero a popular mountain for off-road enthusiasts, who keep the area "humming" in the summer. The San Isabel National Forest, of which this mountain is a part, affords countless recreational opportunities. For all these reasons, Mount Antero is a popular destination.

Chief Antero

Mount Antero is the highest Colorado mountain named after a native American Indian. Neighboring mountains Tabeguache, Shavano, and Ouray, are also American Indian names. Antero was the leader of the Uintah band of Ute Indians. Chief Antero was a proponent of peace between the Utes and the white men during the uprising of the late 1860's and 1870's. He was one of the signers of the Washington Treaty of 1880, which led to the Utes losing most of their land.

Mt. Shavano and Tabeguache Peak are the southernmost fourteeners of the Sawatch range and are usually climbed together . Shavano is also the easternmost 14 er in the Sawatch range. It is most noted for the Angel of Shavano on its east face. In spring and early summer the snow filled gullies resemble and angel with upstreched wings. All the routes are class 2 from any of the trailheads.

La Plata Peak (14,336 ft.) is another big and bulky Sawatch mountain, similar in configuration to Colorado's highest two mountains Mt. Elbert and Mt Massive. The Hayden Survey Team first climbed the peak on July 26th, 1873, then naming the peak La Plata, which means "silver" in Spanish. (Source-Historian Walter R. Borneman) Staying with the typical Sawatch mountaineering theme, La Plata has steep surrounding slopes and gentle, broad ridges leading to its large summit plateau. In contrast to other Sawatch fourteeners, La Plata Peak has an unequaled personality of its own. Colorado's 5th highest mountain harbors a classic technical route, a route that is reserved for only the true mountaineer, the rugged and spectacular Ellingwood Ridge. This sensational 2 mile long ridge is the true redeeming quality that separates La Plata Peak from its neighboring fourteeners.

Mount Elbert has a lot to be proud of: It is the highest mountain in Lake County, highest in Colorado, highest in the Rockies, and second highest in the contiguous United States. But when you ask a non-climber or someone outside of Colorado, nobody has heard of it. However, that’s their loss, because Mt. Elbert is a spectacular peak and worthy of recognition and respect from all. One of the great things about Mt. Elbert is the relatively moderate terrain to the summit, allowing almost anyone with reasonable fitness to enjoy the mountain and its status.

Located in the Sawatch Range of the Colorado Rockies, Mt. Elbert was named for Samuel Elbert who was a controversial territorial governor of Colorado in 1873. The first recorded summit of the peak was by H.W. Stuckle of the Haydon Survey in 1874. Since that time, it has been climbed by thousands and even been summited by jeep.

In the seventies, there was a movement among a group of folks that felt Mt. Elbert's next door neighbor, Mt. Massive, was more deserving to be Colorado's highest peak. They stacked rocks in an attempt to raise the height of Massive's summit on top. Many more detractors would tear the summit cairn down upon their visits, so the attempt at changing Massive's elevation was eventually given up and Mt. Elbert has retained the title as the highest. Towering over the Denver skyline Mt Evans is a very popular mountain for climbers due to it being the closest 14er to Denver.
There is a road to the top of the mountain, and the summit is full of tourists who drive all the way to the summit. The road is closed in the winter. There are routes up Mt Evans that are Class 1,2 3, and 4. This peak is often climbed in conjunction with Mt Bierstadt by crossing the classic "sawtooth" route.
There are 5 trialheads, Echo Lake, Summit Lake, West Chicago Creek, Guanella Pass and Scott Gomer Creek.

Dneska jsme se vrátili z víkendu- zase v Moabu. Tentokrát jsme jezdili na kolech a byli jme na výšlapu v Canyonlands.

The Needles District forms the southeast corner of Canyonlands and was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. The district’s extensive trail system provides many opportunities for long day hikes and overnight trips. Foot trails and four-wheel-drive roads lead to such features as Tower Ruin, Confluence Overlook, Elephant Hill, the Joint Trail, and Chesler Park.

Location

On US Highway 191, drive 40 miles (60 km) south of Moab or 14 miles (22 km) north of Monticello, then take Utah Highway 211 roughly 35 miles (56 km) west. Highway 211 ends in the Needles, and is the only paved road leading in and out of the district.

Počasí se nám tentokát perfektně vydařilo. Hlavně když celý minulý týden tady ve městě sněžilo a bylo hrozně zima. Vrcholu jsme dosáhli po 5ti hodinách.
The southern most of the Collegiate Peaks, Mount Princeton, Colorado's 20th highest, dominates the skyline of the Arkansas Valley. This 14,000 foot peak abruptly rises west of Buena Vista and stands all alone in the Sawatch Range. This summit towers between two large U-shaped glacial valleys in which Chalk Creek and Cottonwood Creek drain into the Arkansas River. Mount Princeton is easily attainable from its eastern ridge, but also offers more challenging routes from all slopes. Lacking in technical routes, except for the Chalk Cliffs, the views from this peak won’t disappoint.

Mount Lindsey and its surrounding terrian boasts some of Colorado's most dramatic scenery. The Huerfano Valley is worth a visit even if climbing is not in your plans. Anybody whose ever been to this trailhead knows this is one of Colorado's finest spots for photography. Blanca and Ellingwood Peak's northeast face absolutely dominates the skyline. It is quite a spectacular place to be.

MOUNT YALE OVERVIEW
Mount Yale and its 14,202-ft. of talus rests within the backbone of the Colorado Continental Divide, the Sawatch Range. This complex range stretches nearly 100 miles north and south, starting at Tennessee Pass and ending at the Marshall Pass area. The Sawatch is home to 15 fourteeners and 14 centennial thirteeners; no other Colorado mountain range contains as many peaks above 13,800 ft. When hiking this range, there are a few things you can count on, long approaches, plenty of vertical, and endless class 2 hiking. Mount Yale is the eighth highest peak in the Sawatch Range and twenty-first in the state on Colorado. Driving through the Arkansas Valley Mount Yale is hard to pick out since there is a ridge extending to the east covering the view of the summit. The peak is located due west of Buena Vista.

Mount Yale received it's name from J.D. Whitney, which he named after his almamater in 1869. Whitney (head of the Harvard School of Mining), W.H. Brewer and C.F. Hoffman of the California survey along with students from the first class to graduate from the Mining School went to Colorado to survey the peaks for two reasons, first to give the students practical work and second to investigate the rumor that these peaks, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia, were higher than the peaks in California.

All of Mount Yale's routes are class 2 hiking which allows even the novice hiker an attainable summit. Keep in mind, Yale is in the Sawatch Range, and one should expect the normal 4,000 ft. of elevation, so be in shape. Also, expect to see a few hikers around, because the standard Southwest Ridge via Denny Creek route is the most popular route. Part of its popularity can be attributed to a paved road all the way to the trailhead.

Poslední dva dny v srpnu jsme věnovali na zdolání dalších dvou 14ti tisícovek. Kvkůli vzdálenosti jsme se rozhodli tento výšlap rozdělit do dvou dnů. V neděli jsme přijeli na místo a vyšlápli jsme až k úpatí hor, kde jsme stanovali přes noc. Druhý den ráno jsme vyrazili na vrcholy. Cesta trvala asi od 7: 30 ráno do 3:30 odpoledne zpátky ke stanu. Pak jěště další hodinu a čtvrt až k autu. Byl to tentokrát jeden z nejtěžších letošních výstupů. Jsme rádi, že se nám podařilo zvládnout oba vrcholy. Vše je vidět na fotkách.

Mt. Harvard is the third highest peak in Colorado and only one of the three that rise above 14,400 feet. It is the fourth highest in the lower 48 states and the high point of Chaffee County. It is situated 11 miles northwest of Buena Vista and is not easily visible from roads or highways. It hides its mass well. Harvard is often climbed in combination with its neighbor, Mount Columbia. Some choose to do the combination in one long day. Be prepared, it is not a slam dunk. The ridge between the two is 2.2 miles and requires substantial elevation gain and loss.

Mt. Harvard was named in 1869 when Harvard geology professor Josiah Whitney led a surveying expedition into Colorado to investigate rumors of soaring 17,000-foot peaks deep in the Rockies. After crossing Trout Creek Pass, they named the highest summit in sight for the expedition's sponsor: Harvard University.

Grays & Torreys

Gray's Peak is the 9th highest mountain in Colorado and is the county high point for both Clear Creek County and Summit County. It is also the highpoint of the Front Range, the highest point on the North American divide, and the highest peak visible from the Great Plains.

Torreys is a large, complicated mountain with a variety of routes for climbers of many skill levels and interests. The standard route, a walk-up from Stevens Gulch, follows the Grays Peak trail to the Grays/Torreys saddle (13,700 feet), and then ascends Torreys's south slope.

At 14,036' Mount Sherman is the 46th highest peak in Colorado. Situated in the Mosquito Range, it lies roughly midway between the cities of Fairplay and Leadville. Although visible from both sides of this north-south running range, Mount Sherman is not easily identified. Gentle ridges run both directions from its broad summit to peaks nearly as high, making it easy to mistake Sherman for one of its neighbors.

Blanca Peak - 14,345ft, 4th highest in Colorado

Blanca Peak is only part of the beauty that makes up the Sierra Blanca Massif. Blanca is the highest of the massif which includes Little Bear (14,037), California Peak (13,849), Mt. Lindsey (14,042) Iron Nipple (13,480), Hamilton Peak (13,658) Peak 13,828, and of course Ellingwood Point (14,042) as well as all the ridges connecting them.

Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Cameron, Mt. Democrat, Mt. Bross

Mt Lincoln is the 8th highest mountain in Colorado and is the county high point for Park County. It is usually climbed after Mt Democrat and before Mt Bross as many climbers like to bag all three the same day. Any of the 3 mountains are pretty easy on their own... but doing all three in a day does require some effort. This was the funnest of the three with a nice little knife like ridge leading out to the summit. From the Democrat/ Cameron saddle it is a Class 2 hike right up the west ridge. There is some exposure, but little danger. This mountain was named for President Lincoln to get back at the Democrats for naming the sister mountain Mount Democrat.

Dneska jsme zdolali další 14ti tisícovku v Coloradu.

Mount Bierstadt is one of Colorado’s most popular, and easiest fourteeners. Along with Mount Evans, Bierstadt is the closest 14'er to Denver. It’s not much more than an hour outside of Denver and the easiest route, theWest Slopes, only requires a 3 mile, 2391 foot ascent up a class 1 trail to reach its summit. Because of its easiness and accessibility Mount Bierstadt is popular with novice peakbaggers. If you climb it during the summer months expect to share the summit with lots of other hikers. Climbing on the weekdays or on one of the South side routes will offer some solitude.

Pikes Peak

Udělali jsme výstup na Pikes Peak 14,110 ft 4,300m. Šli jsme poprvé ze severozápadní strany (Craigs trail 11.5 mi. round trip), tak jsme byli zvědavi jaká to bude cesta. Po příjezdu na místo jsme měli chvíli problém najít tu správnou cestu. A tak jsme se ptali lidí. Nakonec jsme měli štěstí a vyrazili jsme. Cesta byla dobrá, až na hoře začal foukat vítr a byla zima. Poslední úsek jsme šli po silnici a těsně pod vrcholem nás naložil Ranger že prý je zakazáno chodit po silnici.

Great Sand Dunes

Vzrazili jsme na výlet do oblasti národního parku "Great Sand Dunes" na jihu Colorada. Chtěli jsme si udělat výšlap na jezera "Zapata Lakes". Ale od rána bylo zataženo a drobně pršelo. Museli jsme se po půlhodině vrátit. A tak jsme aspoň stihli na chvíli procházku po písečných dunách. Vzhledem k počasí jsme se rozhodli jet domů. Původně to měl být výlet na celý víkend, ale další noc v dešti jsme si rozmysleli. Ale i tak bylo to super.

Závod na 10km. Koná se každoročně ve měste Boulder tady v Coloradu. Na státní svátek "Memorial Day", tedy v pondělí, kdy se svátek slaví. Celý víkend je v Boulderu velký festival s mnoha stánky s občerstvením a růynými atrakcemi. Tento rok jsem po delší době běžel závod. Počasí bylo celý víkend dost deštivé, ale závod se vydařil. Konečně jsme se přestěhovali z Parkeru do Colorada Springs. Podařilo se nám získat krásný dvoupokoják v prvním patře.

Výlet do Arches
Je únor a my máme dva dny volna volna. Po pracovním víkendu jsme vyrazili do Utahu projít se v národním parku Arches.
Vyrážíme v pondělí 23. února po práci z Breckenridge kolem poledne. Přes optimistickou předpověd nám počasí moc nepřeje. Sneží mokrý sníh ale neztrácíme naději. Když jsme se asi po hodině jízdy po highway 70 směrem na západ začali vzdalovat od hor, postupně se sníh změnil v déšt'. Když už jsme přejeli hranice do Utahu začal nám nebezpečně docházet benzín. Minuli jsme posledni město a doufali, že ještě před sjezdem v Crescent Junction z hgw 70 na 191 bude nejaka pumpa. Naštěstí byla. Pak už to bylo veselejší s plnou nádrží. Dojeli jsme ještě za světla do Moabu. Po chvilce hledání jsme našli Hostel Lazy Lizard. Ceny byli přívětivé. Platili jsme asi $31 za malou chatku ve stylu srubu. Uvnitř bylo malé elektrické topení, ale internet jim nefungoval a momentálně nefungoval ani hot tub. Ale na přespání to bylo super.

Druhý den 24.února ráno jsme se probudili do mlhy a věřili, že se počasí zlepší. Vyrazili jsme směrem do Arches. Po vstupu do parku se cesta klikatí mezi skalami prudce vzhůru a za chvíli jsme mlhu nechali hluboko pod námi. Obloha nad námi byla modrá a sluníčko začalo příjemně hřát. Celý den se krásně vyvedl. Všechno jsme zychytili na fotkách a videu. Po celodennim chození, focení a filmování jsme byli už dost unavení. Bylo třeba najít nějaký nocleh. Tentokrát jsme chtěli vyzkoušet něco jiného. Měli jsme štěstí. Byl to asi hned první hotel v Moabu. Aarchway Inn Na velké ceduli nabízeli předjarní slevy. Tak jsme se nechali zlákat za $49 na noc i ze snídaní.
